City council elections will take place Tuesday throughout Dickinson and Iron counties, including a contested race in Iron River that has four candidates vying for two seats.
A handful of millage elections also will be decided, most notably in the Norway-Vulcan School District. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
IRON RIVER
The Iron River candidates for two commission spots are incumbents Anthony Clements and Rodney Dood, who are challenged by Keith D. Hamel and Mark Polley.
NORWAY
Four Norway City Council incumbents are on the ballot for four seats. Bret Kraemer, Jeff Muraro and Scott Popp are seeking full terms, while Rico Meneghini is the lone candidate for a partial term ending in November 2023. Among the candidates for full terms, the two receiving the highest number of votes will be elected to four-year terms, while the candidate receiving the third highest number of votes will be elected for a two-year term.
IRON MOUNTAIN
In Iron Mountain, Dale Alessandrini is unopposed for re-election in Ward 1; newcomer David A. Farragh is unopposed in Ward 2, where William Revord is stepping down; and Cathy Tomassoni, who was appointed in May to fill a vacancy, is unopposed in Ward 3. All terms are four years. Iron Mountain City Council's four at-large seats are not part of this year's election cycle.
KINGSFORD
In Kingsford, incumbents Dennis Baldinelli and Joe Groeneveld are unopposed for four-year terms on the city council.
GAASTRA
In the city of Gaastra in Iron County, incumbent Thomas Place is running unopposed for mayor while Randy Clements and Delsey Treado are unopposed for two spots on the city commission.
CASPIAN
In the city of Caspian, Michael Stachowicz and Ancella Thurston are unopposed for two commission seats.
NORWAY-VULCAN SCHOOLS
The Norway-Vulcan School District proposes a levy of 2 mills for 10 years to fund building, security, technology or other authorized upgrades. The district includes the city of Norway, Norway Township and Waucedah Township in Dickinson County and Faithorn Township in Menominee County.
The school millage, which represents a property tax of $2 per $1,000 of taxable value, would generate an estimated $378,496 when first levied in 2022.
BATES TOWNSHIP
In Iron County's Bates Township, voters are asked to renew a levy of 2 mills for four years for road repairs, beginning this year. It would generate an estimated $115,145 in the first year.
MASTODON TOWNSHIP
Mastodon Township voters in Iron County will be asked to renew a general operating millage of 1.5 mills, or $1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, for five years. The levy would raise an estimated $127,587 when first levied in 2022. Mastodon Township will seek renewal of an accompanying levy of 1.5 mills for road improvements for five years, also beginning in 2022.
