Stanton paving begins in IM

IRON MOUNTAIN — Paving work is getting underway on Stanton Street where Bacco Construction has been hired for a project covering 0.6 miles from U.S. 2 east to Grant Street.

The paving follows Stanton Street sewer repairs recently completed by the Iron Mountain contractor at a cost of $49,000.

Bacco in September was awarded a $465,995 bid to do more than 1.5 miles of paving on city streets and alleys, but only the Stanton work will be done this fall. The completion date for paving was left open until June 2022 because contractors in the region are fully booked, said City Manager Jordan Stanchina.

The city council on Monday approved payment to Bacco for the sewer repairs and was informed the paving project was set to begin.

In other action, the council:

— Observed a moment of silence in memory of former Mayor Kenneth Tousignant, who served two terms beginning in 2006.

— Heard Stanchina report that he continues to research uses for the $765,022 the city will receive under the American Rescue Plan Act, a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill signed into law March 11 by President Joe Biden. A possible focus is one-time big-ticket items that can reduce expenses for the city going forward, he said.

— Learned that a managed archery hunt in the city has culled only 11 deer as of Monday. Mayor Dale Alessandrini said he hopes the harvest picks up because “there is a ton of deer out there.” Last year’s program culled 34 deer, up from 17 in 2019 when chronic wasting disease fears prompted a baiting ban. The highest harvest over the past nine years of the program was 73 deer in 2015.
