NORWAY -- The Norway City Council could soon restart its search for a new city manager.

Ray Anderson, who was originally hired in 1999 as the city's utility director, announced earlier this year his intention to retire from the manager's position in October. City officials, however, have yet to find a successor.

"I did announce my intent to retire earlier this year with a target of October 2021," Anderson said. "Unfortunately, we did not get a candidate in the first round. We did have two but they turned us down for various reasons."

At the council's regular meeting Nov. 22, Mayor Candy Brew said the city may advertise the manager's position again in December and restart the search process.

Brew added that she urges patience with the search, as city officials are "trying to find the right fit" for Norway.

If all goes well, Anderson said a new city manager could be hired within the next two to three months.

"Our plan is to advertise again in December and hopefully have someone by the end of January or February," he said.

After joining the city's staff in 1999, Anderson was named city manager in 2002. During his 20-plus years with Norway, he has also served on the board of directors for both the Michigan Municipal League, as well as the Michigan Municipal Electric Association, including a term as the MMEA board president.

Anderson added, despite his plans to have been retired earlier this fall, he intends to stay in his current role until a replacement is hired.

"Absolutely," he said. "I'm committed to making sure there's a positive transition.

"I also don't want to have the council force themselves into a decision under pressure," he added.
