IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan-filmed thriller “An Intrusion” featuring Kingsford native Kayla Myers — professionally known as Kayla Kelly — will be screened Sunday at The Braumart Theatre in Iron Mountain.

The show will start at 1 p.m., with the doors to open at noon. At that time, Myers will be available for photographs and will provide an introduction to the movie.

Myers will answer questions after the showing, along with Seth Anderson, Braumart Theatre Board vice president. They will also give away signed movie posters.

The independent production that was filmed in Detroit also has actors Dustin Prince, Erika Hoveland and Angelina Danielle Cama; Keir Gilchrist of “Atypical” and “It Follows”; Scout Taylor-Compton of Rob Zombie’s “Halloween”; Sam Logan Khaleghi of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”; and Billy Boyd, who gained fame playing the hobbit Pippin in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

“An Intrusion” is a suspenseful drama that follows a family patriarch who is terrorized by a malicious stalker. As investigation mounts, Sam, played by Prince, fears the attacks may be related to secrets he has violently kept hidden from his family and detectives.

“I’m a little bit of a crazy person in the film,” said Myers, who plays Julia Hilt, Sam’s mistress.

Myers says it’s the story of a man who is trying to end an affair but in the process he is being blackmailed. “He is trying to figure out who is sending him these phone calls, emails and other threats,” she said. “But I can’t give it away — you will have to watch it.”

She initially connected with director and writer Nicholas Hollands at a Detroit networking event in March 2017. Myers met a lot of filmmakers there and ended up working with five of them.

“It was a very productive meeting, I’d say,” Anderson said.

Myers said Hollands’ authenticity intrigued her. “He had only made one film, ‘Wronged,’ that was picked up by Lionsgate — which is a big deal for someone’s first feature film,” she said, adding that Hollands is a paramedic by trade in Detroit and lead singer in a hardcore band.

A year after the event, she received a call from the event coordinator asking if she remembered Hollands, noting he was working on another production. “He thought I would be good in a role,” she said.

Myers originally was cast as Savannah Simpson, a detective on the case and a main character, but after they picked up actress Taylor-Compton, she was switched to play the mistress.

“I was OK with it — I knew this role will be fun, too,” she said. “I completely understand how the process works.”

Myers stressed that Hollands worked hard to make this production happen, along with landing several “name” actors.

Hollands reached out to Gilchrist, who also plays in the hardcore metal band, after he posted a photo of himself in one of Hollands’ band shirts. “He said, ‘It’s a shot in the dark, but I’m going to message this guy,'” Myers said.

“I find that’s how it happens,” Anderson added. “If you are genuine and interested in the same things, you can connect with people you wouldn’t think.”

The majority of the production was filmed in about 12 or 13 days — from December 2019 to January 2020 — with Boyd’s portion shot in the spring.

“It was 12-plus-hour days of shooting,” she said. “But it was a fun set to be part of.”

Myers also credits “An Intrusion” producer Khaleghi, also is an actor in the film. “It was a small crew, but it has an amazing cast with killer storyline,” she said. “They put so much into this — the audience will be impressed.”

She added the film has a lot of beautiful aerial shots of Detroit that are stunning, along with some “really cool music.”

“Detroit is an interesting landscape,” Anderson added. “It’s the other end of the coin of what we have here — Detroit still has a grit to it.”

“An Intrusion” was among eight productions Myers worked on last year. She currently has seven jobs booked in 2022, in addition to finishing a production this weekend in Detroit.

Myers continues to be involved with the local media project “Northbound,” written and directed by Anderson.

“I’m excited to have the movie premiere in my hometown — this is where it all started for me, in community theater,” she said.

“An Intrusion” dropped Nov. 26 on Black Friday. The movie, which is distributed by Gravitas Ventures, is now available on Video on Demand and is playing in select theaters across the U.S. and several other countries. The film will be available for purchase on DVD/Blu-ray on Jan. 25.

“We (the Braumart) wants to make sure we are doing more of this, which is showing off local talent,” Anderson stressed. “As well as filmmaking in Michigan, which demystifies the fact that films are only made on one coast or the other.”

A goodwill offering will be taken at the door the day of the event. The Braumart is at 106 W. B St. in Iron Mountain.
