State: UP posts 696 new virus cases in five days
State data Monday indicated a surge of coronavirus activity in the Upper Peninsula in the past five days, with 696 new confirmed positives and 11 more deaths.
The deaths included one in Iron County, along with 34 new virus cases, while the state posted 37 confirmed positives for Dickinson County.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Monday listed 266 new confirmed cases in Marquette County, 80 in Delta County, 58 in Houghton County, 56 in Chippewa County, 43 in Menominee County, 37 in Dickinson County, 34 in Iron County, 28 in Gogebic County, 24 in Alger County, 22 in Mackinac County, 17 in Baraga County, 12 in Schoolcraft County, seven in Keweenaw and Luce counties, and five in Ontonagon County. The state recorded four more virus-related deaths in Chippewa County, two in Delta County, and one each in Iron, Menominee, Schoolcraft, Mackinac and Houghton counties.
Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Monday has had 36,664 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 664 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Monday had Keweenaw County at 355 confirmed cases and 43 probable, and 10 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 485 confirmed cases and 574 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 679 confirmed, 80 probable and 26 deaths, one probable; Alger County, 720 confirmed, 413 probable and six deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 831 confirmed cases and 396 probable, eight deaths and one probable; Mackinac County, 1,124 confirmed cases and 608 probable, 18 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,298 confirmed cases, 215 probable and 46 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 1,716 confirmed cases and 191 probable, 59 deaths and 13 probable; Gogebic County, 1,929 confirmed cases and 429 probable, 33 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 2,174 confirmed cases and 3,119 probable, and 56 deaths, 12 probable; Menominee County, 3,118 confirmed cases, 1,161 probable and 53 deaths, eight probable; Dickinson County, 3,716 confirmed cases and 1,490 probable, 75 deaths and 18 probable; Houghton County, 4,863 confirmed cases, 867 probable, 63 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 5,909 confirmed cases and 1,343 probable, 115 deaths and 22 probable; and Marquette County, 7,747 confirmed cases, 1,873 probable and 92 deaths, five probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Monday had 61,235 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of about 12,247 per day for the five-day period, for a total to date of 1,568,573. The state since Wednesday added 298 deaths attributed to the virus — including 172 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 27,286.
The state issues new COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but did not this past Friday due to the New Year’s holiday.
For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday had since Wednesday 102 new confirmed positives in Marinette County, 85 in Vilas County, 25 in Forest County, seven in Iron County and three in Florence County.
The DHS data site Monday had Marinette County with 7,465 confirmed cases, 1,502 probable cases and 83 deaths, 12 probable deaths; Vilas County, 3,565 confirmed, 191 probable and 66 deaths, four probable; Forest County, 1,762 confirmed, 146 probable and 36 deaths, four probable; Iron County, 840 confirmed, 212 probable and 23 deaths, 21 probable; and Florence County, 626 confirmed, 170 probable and 15 deaths.
Wisconsin data Monday showed 25,489 more positives in the state since Wednesday — or about 5,098 a day for the five-day period — for a total of 1,005,150 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state recorded 61 more virus-related deaths over the five days to reach 10,075.
