Pace of new virus cases continues to slow in UP

The pace of COVID-19 activity in the region continues to slow, as state data Wednesday showed Dickinson County added 27 confirmed COVID-19 positives and Iron County 16 new cases in the past two days.

Figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday indicated 286 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Monday: 82 in Marquette County, 32 in Delta County, 27 in Dickinson County, 26 in Houghton County, 24 in Menominee County, 23 in Chippewa County, 16 in Iron County, 12 in Schoolcraft and Gogebic counties, 10 in Mackinac County, eight in Alger County, six in Ontonagon County, four in Baraga County, three in Luce County, and one in Keweenaw County. The state posted only one death, in Houghton County.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 49,576 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 760 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 443 confirmed cases and 52 probable, and 11 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 633 confirmed cases and 738 probable, seven confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 844 confirmed, 101 probable and 32 deaths, two probable; Alger County, 1,008 confirmed, 653 probable and seven deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,048 confirmed cases and 636 probable, 11 deaths and two probable; Mackinac County, 1,476 confirmed cases and 825 probable, 26 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,660 confirmed cases, 314 probable and 50 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,246 confirmed cases and 325 probable, 66 deaths and 13 probable; Gogebic County, 2,660 confirmed cases and 514 probable, 36 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,210 confirmed cases and 4,858 probable, and 72 deaths, 15 probable; Menominee County, 3,759 confirmed cases, 1,639 probable and 59 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,889 confirmed cases and 2,322 probable, 82 deaths and 19 probable; Houghton County, 6,513 confirmed cases, 1,062 probable, 74 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,687 confirmed cases and 1,997 probable, 123 deaths and 25 probable; and Marquette County, 11,500 confirmed cases, 2,952 probable and 104 deaths, eight probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday had 7,527 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Monday, or an average of about 3,764 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 2,026,646. The state since Monday added 330 deaths attributed to the virus — including 239 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 30,747.

The state issues new COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 11,289 COVID-19 positives, up 51 since Monday, and 104 deaths, up one; Vilas County, 5,077 positives, up 18, and 83 deaths; Forest County, 2,615 positives, up 24, and 47 deaths; Iron County, 1,448, up two, and 45 deaths; and Florence County, 1,043 positives, up seven, and 15 deaths.
