State: 2 more virus deaths in Dickinson; only 8 new positives

State data Wednesday showed Dickinson County had two more deaths blamed on COVID-19 but only eight new confirmed cases of the virus in the past two days.

Iron County also had only eight confirmed COVID-19 positives since Monday, according to figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday.

Figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday indicated 181 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Monday: 53 in Marquette County; 29 in Houghton County; 25 in Delta County; 16 in Chippewa County; nine in Gogebic and Baraga counties; eight in Dickinson and Iron counties; seven in Menominee County; six in Mackinac County; three in Schoolcraft, Alger and Ontonagon counties; and two in Keweenaw County. The state listed nine more virus-related deaths: two in Dickinson and Chippewa counties, one each in Delta, Marquette, Luce, Mackinac and Gogebic counties.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 50,150 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 780 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 446 confirmed cases and 53 probable, and 11 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 638 confirmed cases and 746 probable, eight confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 856 confirmed, 102 probable and 33 deaths, two probable; Alger County, 1,018 confirmed, 658 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,060 confirmed cases and 656 probable, 11 deaths and two probable; Mackinac County, 1,492 confirmed cases and 830 probable, 26 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,679 confirmed cases, 319 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,271 confirmed cases and 331 probable, 68 deaths and 13 probable; Gogebic County, 2,687 confirmed cases and 520 probable, 37 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,272 confirmed cases and 4,936 probable, and 76 deaths, 16 probable; Menominee County, 3,804 confirmed cases, 1,661 probable and 59 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,936 confirmed cases and 2,353 probable, 84 deaths and 20 probable; Houghton County, 6,564 confirmed cases, 1,066 probable, 77 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,781 confirmed cases and 2,024 probable, 125 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 11,646 confirmed cases, 2,990 probable and 106 deaths, eight probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday had 4,271 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Monday, or an average of about 2,136 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 2,042,013. The state since Monday added 312 deaths attributed to the virus — including 274 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 31,271.

The state issues new COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 11,417 COVID-19 positives, up 25 since Monday, and 107 deaths, up one; Vilas County, 5,122 positives, up seven, and 85 deaths, up two; Forest County, 2,650 positives, up 12, and 49 deaths, up two; Iron County, unchanged at 1,452 positives and 45 deaths; and Florence County, 1,063 positives, up three, and 15 deaths.
