KINGSFORD -- The city of Kingsford will buy a used garbage truck for $65,000 to supplement its fleet after its decision to continue collecting its own garbage.
Michigamme Township is selling the 2016 EVO garbage truck with 17,000 miles because it's going with private garbage collection. A new vehicle would cost more than $200,000. The city's current garbage trucks are from 2003 and 2014.
City Manager Mike Stelmaszek told the council this week the vehicle became available very quickly and Public Works Director Jeff DeMuri was able to negotiate the price.
The city had looked into using a private garbage hauler to see if it would reduce the cost but discovered it would not.
Stelmaszek also informed the council four people have applied for the two public works department openings. The deadline is April 4.
In other business, the council:
-- Approved a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Committee to convert the aging tennis courts at Ford Addition Park into one or two half-court basketball courts, with the rest to be used for parking. The public works department will decide how many courts will fit.
No cost estimate was given, but American Rescue Plan Act funding will be used to pay for the project. The city is expected to receive about $518,000, but $74,232 already has been used. It was estimated it would cost about $50,000 to completely refurbish the courts for tennis.
Stelmaszek said additional tennis courts aren't a priority because the city has others by the Kingsford High School and in Lodal Park. The city plans to use the tennis court fencing for new pickleball courts at Lodal Park.
