State cutting back on COVID reports as numbers of new cases slow down

State data Monday showed three more confirmed COVID-19 positives in Iron County but no new cases in Dickinson County since Friday.

Perhaps reflecting the reduced rate of COVID activity in the state, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Monday announced it would switch next week to updating its numbers on Wednesdays only, rather than Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Its data also will combine confirmed and probable numbers.

The MDHHS coronavirus website Monday had 25 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula in the past three days: four in Menominee, Chippewa, Houghton and Baraga counties; three in Iron and Delta counties; two in Gogebic County; and one in Mackinac County. The state recorded new virus-related deaths in Houghton and Gogebic counties.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Monday has had 51,249 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 826 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Monday had Keweenaw County at 456 confirmed cases and 54 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 661 confirmed cases and 763 probable, 10 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 877 confirmed, 104 probable and 35 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,056 confirmed, 657 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,083 confirmed cases and 665 probable, 14 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,549 confirmed cases and 836 probable, 28 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,719 confirmed cases, 317 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,309 confirmed cases and 337 probable, 71 deaths and 16 probable; Gogebic County, 2,727 confirmed cases and 521 probable, 40 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,405 confirmed cases and 5,061 probable, and 86 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 3,933 confirmed cases, 1,686 probable and 60 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,983 confirmed cases and 2,377 probable, 86 deaths and 22 probable; Houghton County, 6,696 confirmed cases, 1,089 probable, 79 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,884 confirmed cases and 2,035 probable, 130 deaths and 25 probable; and Marquette County, 11,911 confirmed cases, 3,023 probable and 116 deaths, 10 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Monday had 1,258 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Friday, or an average of about 420 per day for the three-day period, for a total of 2,077,401 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that period added six deaths attributed to the virus to reach 32,758.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Monday had Marinette County at 11,571 COVID-19 positives, up three since Friday, and 122 deaths, up two; Vilas County, 5,204 positives, up three, and 89 deaths, up one; Forest County, unchanged at 2,667 positives and 51 deaths; Iron County, unchanged at 1,464 positives and 47 deaths; and Florence County, 1,079 positives, up one, and 16 deaths.
