Council OKs downtown IM festivals

IRON MOUNTAIN — Three Saturday festivals are scheduled for downtown Iron Mountain this year, starting with Brew Fest on June 11, followed by Italian Fest on Aug. 13 and Oktoberfest on Oct. 1.

The city council approved a request Monday from the Downtown Development Authority for parking lot and street closures in connection with the events.

The DDA will also host Out to Lunch concerts each Thursday from June 9 through Aug. 11, said Kenzie Williamsen, event coordinator. All events will take place in compliance with government guidelines related to COVID-19, she added.

The festivals will use the parking lot adjacent to East A, Iron Mountain and Hughitt streets, except for the area where the Farmer’s Market is held. Iron Mountain Street will be closed from East A to Hughitt.

Provisions of the city noise ordinance will be waived until midnight for both Italian Fest and Oktoberfest.

Out to Lunch concerts will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., also with Iron Mountain Street closed and the Hughitt Street parking lot closed in front of the Systems Control Stage near Magee Johnson Park.

Information and updates will be posted at https://www.downtownironmountain.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/downtownironmountain/.

In other action, the council:

— Heard City Manager Jordan Stanchina report that infrastructure projects for the next fiscal year beginning July 1 may be affected by oil prices and supply chain problems. “Things could change, but we’ll see,” he said. In some cases, it might be best to delay the work, he said.

— Authorized Stanchina to buy a lawnmower for Cemetery Park outside of the bidding process up to $10,000. With suppliers unable to guarantee delivery, this will enable to the city to acquire a mower meeting minimum specifications if one becomes available.

— Approved a request from the Dickinson County Office of Veterans Affairs to close U.S. 2 from East Ludington Street to East D Street from about 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, for the annual Memorial Day observance. A ceremony will take place in front of the courthouse after a parade that steps off at 8:45 a.m. from East Ludington.

— Under terms of the City Charter, set a payment deadline for water charges that have been due and unpaid for three months or more. Bills that aren’t paid by April 30 will be transferred to the tax roll and assessed against the property to which the water was furnished. The unpaid bills total nearly $17,000, ranging from pennies to as high as $3,113.
