Student dies after self-inflicted gunshot at Ishpeming school

ISHPEMING — Students will return today to NICE Community Schools that were closed after a student mortally wounded himself with a gun in a bathroom at an Ishpeming area school Tuesday afternoon.

A Michigan State Police trooper was already in a different part of the Aspen Ridge School in Ishpeming Township, giving presentations to students, when the report came in about 12:30 p.m. of a student with a firearm, according to Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post.

That trooper found a lone juvenile male inside a bathroom with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. First aid was immediately rendered as additional patrol units and EMS responded.

The student was transported by EMS to UP Health System-Marquette, where he later died from his injuries.

Aspen Ridge School was placed on lockdown during this incident as law enforcement cleared the building and began an investigation that revealed it was an isolated incident involving one student and no other students or the public were under threat, according to the MSP statement.

Further investigation will take place, state police said. The name of the juvenile will not be released.

Troopers were assisted by Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and Ishpeming Township Police Department, as well as local EMS.

NICE Community Schools remained closed Wednesday while community grief counseling took place throughout the day at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.
