Gaastra awarded state grant to replace water system meters

LANSING — The city of Gaastra will receive $103,200 to replace water meters under Michigan’s Financially Distressed Cities, Villages and Townships grant program, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Wednesday.

A total of $3 million is being awarded to fund infrastructure and public safety enhancements in 11 municipalities statewide, Whitmer said.

For fiscal year 2022, the Legislature appropriated $2.5 million for the grant program, with a $500,000 carryover from the previous fiscal year. Grants are awarded based on applications submitted by the municipality.

The grant awarded to Gaastra will allow residents to have updated water meters, said Mayor Tom Place.

“Many are outdated and getting costly to repair,” Place said. “And as we all know, budgets are tight. I am thankful for this grant to allow the city to run more efficiently.”

Elsewhere in the Upper Peninsula, the village of Ontonagon will receive $216,287 for replacing water meters. The updated system will streamline billing while reducing labor costs, said William DuPont, village manager.

Starting at $3.50/week.
