North Central names top seniors for 2022

DAKOTA SCHWARK
POWERS — North Central Area Schools has announced the top seniors for the graduating Class of 2022.
Graduation ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, May 20, in the high school gymnasium.
— Dakota Schwark, son of Steve and Michelle Schwark of Hermansville, earned valedictorian with a cumulative 3.97 grade-point average.
He has volunteered his time in helping with Community Project Day activities; Powers-Spalding Lions Club pasty sales; Operation Christmas Child and various NCA Guarantee Scholarship fundraisers.
He has served as class treasurer all four years; Quiz Bowl four years and a team captain his senior year; robotics four years and a driver his senior year; National Honor Society for three years, elected secretary his junior year and treasurer his senior year.

ARIEL POUPORE
Schwark has been in Boy Scouts since first grade and is a Life Scout working toward Eagle Scout. He has also been a 4-H member for three years.
Honors and awards he has received in high school, including Academic Excellence Awards four years (all A’s every year); Citizenship Award three years; Student of the Year in 2021; dean’s list 4.0 GPA at Bay de Noc Community College as well as various awards in English, math, science and history.
His extracurricular activities include one year of track, four years of cross country and golf.
His hobbies and free-time activities include spending time with family, friends and pets, drawing, painting, ATV riding, hunting, fishing and working.
Schwark plans to study biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan this fall.

SARAH SNYDER
— Ariel Poupore, daughter of Dan and Denise Poupore of Carney, has earned salutatorian with a cumulative GPA of 3.90.
She has volunteered her time in helping with Community Project Day activities; Mission of Hope 906 from 2019 to present; John Lauren 5K from 2007 to 2019; Operation Christmas Child from 2010 to present; animal shelter from 2010 to 2017; Barb Palzewicz Hope Memorial 5K; flag placement at local cemeteries for Veterans Day; and various local benefits.
Poupore was class president in ninth and 10th grade and secretary in 11th and 12th grade; National Honor Society for three years and was elected secretary senior year. She has been in pep band all four years of high school.
Honors and awards during high school include the Academic Excellence Award all of her high school years; all “A” honor roll all four years; as well as various awards in English, math, science and history; and certificate of merit from the Society of Women Engineers: Michigan Technological University Chapter.
Her extracurricular activities include four years of volleyball. During her free time, Poupore enjoys downhill skiing, volleyball, reading, swimming and spending time with family and friends.

KATELYN WHITENS
Poupore plans to finish the fifth-year program through Bay College, then pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering through Lake Superior State University, and finally obtain her master’s degree in aerospace engineering.
— Sarah Snyder, daughter of Mike and Vicki Snyder of Powers, is the top honor student with a 3.76 cumulative GPA.
She has volunteered in all of the Community Project Day activities; Community Thanksgiving Dinner from ninth to 12th grades; Hermansville Hustle from 10th to 12th; Special Olympics basketball in ninth grade; and benefits in 12th. She has been on student council from 10th to 12th grade and served as president in 11th and 12th grades.
Snyder has been an active member of National Honor Society for three years and yearbook editor from ninth through 12th grades.
Some of her high school awards and honors include Academic Excellence Awards all four years; Industrial Arts Award for woodworking and welding from ninth through 11th grades; Determined to Learn Award in 10th grade; and has been selected as Student of the Week ninth through 12th grades.
Her extracurricular activities include basketball and golf. During her free time she enjoys horseback riding, golfing, basketball and traveling.
Snyder plans to study diagnostic medical sonography this fall at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
— Katelyn Whitens, daughter of Mark and Renee Whitens of Hermansville, is the top honor student with a 3.78 cumulative GPA.
She has volunteered in all of the Community Project Day activities; the Lions Club pasty sale from eighth through 11th grades; Hermansville Hustle from 10th through 12th; planting flowers at the intersection in Powers; various church-related functions; and Adopt-a-Highway cleanup for the Lions Club for two years.
Whitens has been an active member of National Honor Society for three years; St. John Neumann Youth Group from ninth through 12th grades and church choir since eighth grade.
Some of her high school awards and honors include Academic Excellence Awards all four years; the Principal’s Award; Citizenship Award; as well as various awards in English, math, science and history.
Her extracurricular activities include track as a freshman; basketball in ninth and 10th grade; and volleyball in ninth, 10th and 12th grades.
During her free time she enjoys being outdoors, hunting, fishing and hiking, riding horses, singing, making music and spending time with family and friends.
Whitens plans to pursue a career in health and wellness along with being a personal trainer at the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
