Local volunteers recently gathered to do a spring cleanup at the Oscar G. Johnson Memorial on M-69 in northern Dickinson County. Johnson, a native of Foster City, was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions in World War II. As a member of B Company, 363rd Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division, Johnson single-handedly repelled a series of six enemy attacks during a three-day battle on Monticelli Ridge in Scarperia, Italy, on Sept. 16 through 18, 1944. He was credited with the deaths of 20 enemy troops and the surrender of 25 more. M-69 is designated as the Oscar G. Johnson Memorial Highway from where it meets M-95 in Randville and where M-69 meets U.S. 2 in Bark River. (Submitted photo)
