Kayak, paddleboard, bike rentals coming to Lake Antoine

IRON MOUNTAIN — True North Outpost of Norway will rent kayaks, paddle boards and bicycles at Lake Antoine Park under an agreement approved by the Dickinson County Board.

True North, doing business as Blue-Mystique, may operate any day of the week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The county will receive a 10% commission on gross receipts.

Indemnification and insurance stipulations are also part of the contract approved Monday.

In other action, the county board:

— Adopted a resolution opposing a proposed U.S. Department of Labor rule change that would reverse current federal policy that allows staffing flexibilities in providing Wagner-Peyser Act employment services. If the change goes through, it could force 12 of the U.P.’s 14 Michigan Works! service centers to close their doors, according to Bill Raymond, CEO of Upper Peninsula Michigan Works!. The Wagner-Peyser Act is a 1933 law that established the nationwide system of employment services that state workforce agencies like Michigan Works! provide.

— Heard Controller Brian Bousley discuss the possibility of a regional medical examiner’s facility, potentially in a stand-alone building at Ford Airport. The county must sometimes have autopsies done in Houghton for a fee and has discussed the possibility of hosting a regional facility since early 2020.
