UP labor market holds steady in April

IRON MOUNTAIN -- Jobless rates were mostly unchanged in April as the Upper Peninsula rate came in at 5.8%, up slightly from 5.7% in March, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.

"Michigan's regional labor markets were stable in April," said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. "Payroll jobs rose throughout most regions as seasonal industries, such as construction and leisure and hospitality, added jobs."

The statewide jobless rate of 4.2% in April was down from 4.5% in March.

Unemployment rates fell in all 17 Michigan labor markets over the year, with a median decrease of 0.3 percentage points, Rourke added. The U.P.'s jobless rate in April 2021 was 6.7% -- 0.9 percentage points higher than now.

The jobless rate in Dickinson County in April was 4.2%, up from 4.1% in March but down from 5.3% a year ago.

The county's civilian labor force in April numbered 12,103, including 514 unemployed. At the peak of pandemic layoffs in April 2020, the county's labor force had totaled 11,463, including 1,874 out of work, for a jobless rate of 16.3%.

The unemployment rate in Iron County in April was 6%, up from 5.7% in March but down from 7.1% in April 2021. The labor force totaled 4,797, including 287 unemployed. Two years ago the county's civilian labor force was pegged at 4,665, including 860 jobless, for an April 2020 unemployment rate of 18.4%.

Menominee County continues to show the lowest jobless rate in the U.P. at 4.1%, followed by Dickinson's 4.2% rate. Mackinac County had the state's highest not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April at 13.7%.

The U.S. jobless rate of 3.6% in April was unchanged from March. The U.S. unemployment rate in April 2021 was 6%, while in April 2020 it was 14.7%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
