Aging Sawyer Lake 4-H camp may revert to Dickinson County

IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County will pay for a title search for the Camp Molinare property at Sawyer Lake, expecting that it may take possession of the site and offer it for sale.

The 4-H camp, which opened in 1949, is now seldom used and efforts to save it have met with limited success, Controller Brian Bousley said. Although the camp is available for rental, “utilization is a huge issue,” he told the county board Monday.

A Facebook post for the camp includes a request for new board members and volunteers, citing “a very limited or next to nothing” budget.

Commissioner John Degenaer Jr. said he believes the property would revert to the county if the camp is no longer viable.

The county’s title search is intended to clarify that issue, along with the status of neighboring land possibly acquired after the camp was established.

Commissioner Joe Stevens said it’s a valuable stretch of land. If efforts to keep the camp open are fruitless, “I would say knock it down and sell the property,” he said.

In other action, the county board:

— Accepted an estimate of $83,170 from Steve Johnson and Sons Painting of Foster City to paint the grandstand at the county fairgrounds in Norway. The job does not include the main cement walkway in front of the bleachers and the outside of the grandstand, as it is to be covered with tin in the future. Stevens voted no, saying the county could save $15,000 to $20,000 by doing its own preparatory work. Chairman Henry Wender said any the savings might be lost to higher costs in delaying the work. The goal is to have the painting done before the county fair Sept. 1-5.

— Approved the $41,980 purchase of a fuel system, including a 2,000-gallon above-ground steel tank, from Great Lakes Petroleum Service Inc. of Republic. The tank will be inside a fenced area at Ford Airport and used to fuel county vehicles. In addition to airport needs, it is becoming difficult for sheriff’s vehicles to get gas on night shift, Bousley said. The county expects to pay the expense with federal funds.

— Heard Bousley report that talks are continuing on setting up a medical examiner’s facility in a stand-alone building at Ford Airport that could potentially serve as a regional site for conducting autopsies.

Starting at $3.50/week.
