Breitung Township paces home construction activity in Dickinson County

A total of 47 permits were issued for new home construction in 2021 in Dickinson County, including 17 in Breitung Township.

The total construction cost for the 47 homes is estimated at $11 million, or about $235,000 per house, according to the Dickinson County Construction Code Commission.

Waucedah Township showed the second-most new home permits at eight, followed by Sagola Township and the city of Norway, five each; city of Kingsford and Breen Township, four each; Norway Township, three; and Felch Township and city of Iron Mountain, one each.

Permits were also issued for alterations, accessory buildings and other residential construction totaling about $3.3 million across the county.

While Iron Mountain lagged in new home construction, it had the highest amount of permit activity for commercial work — $10.1 million in alterations and new construction.

That was followed by Breitung Township, $2 million; Kingsford, $1.4 million; city of Norway, $1 million; and Sagola Township, $600,000.

Permits were also issued across the county in 2021 for re-roofing projects totaling about $1.2 million.
