KINGSFORD -- A new salt shed will be built near Kingsford's Public Works Building after the city council gave approval for City Manager Michael Stelmaszek to sign for a state grant.
The Michigan Department of Transportation grant will pay for 22% of the final cost, Stelmaszek said. The final amount has not yet been determined.
About $180,000 of the city's federal American Rescue Plan Act funds have been appropriated toward the cost, with any balance to come from the city's general fund.
The new shed will be approximately 60 feet by 75 feet for a total of 4,500 square feet. It will hold all the salt and dirt used to maintain the city's roads during the winter.
The current salt shed, located near City Hall, is approximately 28 feet by 36 feet and only holds salt. Dirt is piled next to the shed.
In other business July 17, the council:
-- Learned the city received no civil service applications for an entry-level position in the public safety department. Stelmaszek said they will try to come up with a solution.
-- Agreed to seek bids to demolish a house at 421 Wright St. The city will leave the services in place, in case the property is eventually sold.
-- Accepted a bid from Teck Solutions of Kingsford in the amount of $1,982 for two Dell laptop computers, along with installation and configuration. The cost will be reimbursed by a Michigan Bureau of Elections grant. There were three bids.
-- Approved a cable installation request from the American Transmission Company in Kingsford.
