Bird to remove IM scooters

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Bird scooter era in Iron Mountain will soon come to an end, city council members learned Monday.

Iron Mountain was the first city in the Upper Peninsula to get the stand-up scooters, but after introducing the rentals only last summer Bird has decided the market isn’t viable.

In a memo to the council, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said Bird indicated there was no immediate path to supporting “an enduring business” in Iron Mountain. Scooters will be removed by Aug. 31, he said.

Rentals are activated by downloading the Bird app onto a cell phone. Based in Miami, Fla., the company operates rentals in more than 400 cities.

Iron Mountain had no financial interest in the rentals, approving only a memorandum of understanding with Bird allowing a small fleet within the city’s boundaries.

Starting at $3.50/week.
