Millages approved in Dickinson, Iron counties
Voters in both Dickinson and Iron counties gave their support to millage questions that were part of Tuesday’s primary election ballot.
The renewal of a property tax levy for the Norway-Vulcan Senior Citizens Center was approved in the city of Norway as well as Norway and Waucedah townships.
The levy of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, passed in Waucedah Township by 140 yes to 58 no; in Norway Township, 252 yes to 88 no; and in the city of Norway, 411 yes to 101 no. The renewal is for four years.
Voters in the North Dickinson County School District renewed a 10-year request for a 2-mill sinking fund levy, 309 yes to 234 no. The tax is $2 per $1,000 of taxable property value.
In Sagola Township, levies were renewed for two years for fire protection, 208 yes to 53 no, and ambulance support, 208 yes to 53 no. The fire millage is 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, while the ambulance levy is 0.75 mills, or 75 cents per $1,000 of taxable value.
A renewal of 0.5 mills for the Windsor Center in Iron River was authorized Tuesday in four Iron County municipalities.
The four-year levy of 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value was approved in Bates Township, 122 yes to 81 no; in Iron River Township, 183 yes to 126 no; Stambaugh Township, 186 yes to 74 no; and the city of Iron River, 284 yes to 121 no.
Meanwhile, Iron River Township voters approved a general operating renewal of 1.25 mills, or $1.25 per $1,000 of taxable value. The vote was 215 yes to 95 no.
A road repair levy of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, was authorized in Iron River Township for three years by a vote of 196 yes to 112 no.
Results for area state Senate and House races were incomplete by the Daily News’ press time.
In the 38th Senate District, incumbent state Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Waucedah Township, easily defeated two challengers, Matthew Furyk of Marquette and Kayla Wikstrom of Perkins. McBroom had 78% of the vote with 95% of the precincts reporting Tuesday night.
In the 109th House District, Democrat Jenn Hill of Marquette and Republican Melody Wagner of Sands Township were the respective winners in their primary races.
Hill defeated Joe Boogren, receiving 55% of the vote. Wagner, with 53% support, outpolled Ron Gray.
In the 108th House District Republican primary, David Prestin of Cedar River prevailed with 42% of the vote against three opponents. Mark Simon of Menominee finished second with 28% support.
