Family rescued on Lake Superior

CHRISTMAS — A family of four was uninjured after a water rescue at Five Mile Point near Christmas.

The family was traveling on Lake Superior to Grand Island in a canoe and a kayak at around 2:20 p.m. Friday when the kayak began to take on water. The father and son were traveling in the kayak, which ultimately sunk.

The boy was able to get into the canoe with his mother and sister. The mother called 911 to report that she was stranded in the canoe with the children and had lost sight of her husband after he fell in the water.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office worked with Alger County Rescue 21, a U.S. Forest Service officer and the U.S. Coast Guard to rescue the family and transport them to the mainland. No one was injured in the incident and no names have been released.

Starting at $3.50/week.
