Florence fair adds pony pull, arts/crafts show, brings back karaoke contest
Mud Bog runs will begin at noon Saturday at the Florence County Fair at Fair Park just south of Florence, Wis.
FLORENCE, Wis. — Impressed by the natural “horsepower” on display in horse-pulling events at area county fairs?
Well, this year’s Florence County Fair will offer the mini-version.
The 118th annual fair, which starts Friday, has added a Pony Pull to its Sunday events.
This is similar to the regular horse pull that will take place in the afternoon, but for smaller-sized draft ponies.
“Everybody loves the draft horse pulls, so we’re trying to get the word out about the pony pull,” said Jessica Klumpp, the fair’s executive director.
Also new this year is an Arts and Crafts Show with vendors selling a variety of goods and products — from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on the soccer field at Fair Park.
Returning to the fair this year after a long absence is a karaoke contest set for Saturday evening.
The fair will feature its usual main events of the Garden Tractor Pull on Friday, the Mud Bog on Saturday and conclude with the pony and horse pull Sunday afternoon. Live music also will be on site all three days.
Friday’s schedule starts with Vicky’s Karaoke allowing those unafraid to sing in public a chance to shine from 4 to 7 p.m.
The flag raising that signals the official opening of the fair will be at 5 p.m., along with exhibit displays opening to the public.
The Garden Tractor Pull, featuring the UP Garden Tractor Pullers, begins at 5 p.m. as well.
The band Fatwood — described on its Facebook site as “rock ‘n’ roll, high-energy blues, as well as country and rockabilly; it offers something for everyone” — will play from 7 to 11 p.m.
Exhibit buildings will open to the public at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
One of Saturday’s highlights is the Mud Bog competition, with registration from 7 to 10:30 a.m., then the “mud begins to fly” at noon.
Jumpin’ Good Time brings an array of inflatables from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Cost is 50 cents for a single time or $10 for unlimited use.
Polka group The Musical Knights performs from 1 to 4 p.m. Kids’ activities and games start at 2 p.m.
Vicky’s Karaoke is from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday and will include a contest with cash prizes: $150 for first; $100 for second; and $50 for third. Contest participants only need to show up and sign up.
The classic rock band Old Skol will plays from 7 to 11 p.m.
Sunday features the Classic Car and Motorcycle Show, with registration from 9 a.m. to noon, then the vehicles on display until awards at 2 p.m.
Lovin’ Country will play from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as between the new pony pull and horse pull.
The pony pull is set for 1 p.m. The draft horse pull starts at 3 p.m.
The flag will be lowered at 4 p.m. Sunday, at which time all exhibits will be released.
Admission to the fair is $10 and is good for the entire fair weekend for ages 12 and older, with no added cost for special events such as the Mud Bog and horse pulls. Admission for seniors ages 65 and older and fair exhibitors ages 12 and older is $5 per person. Ages 11 and younger are free to attend the fair.
A special Sunday-only admission price of $5 will be offered for attendees ages 12 and older who only attend on Sunday.
The county fair park is at 5505 County Highway N, just 1/3-mile south of U.S. 2 in Florence.
