IM prepares for Pewabic trail project

IRON MOUNTAIN — Coleman Engineering will provide engineering services for Iron Mountain’s grant-aided mountain bike trail system on Pewabic Hill.

The city council Monday approved a $4,900 contract with the Iron Mountain firm, mainly to approve documents before soliciting bids.

The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund will provide $183,200 for the project, matched by $64,000 from the non-profit Dickinson Trail Network. The city has committed $15,000 worth of in-kind work.

DTN envisions six miles of public trails on city property east of Park Avenue at East B Street. The new trails will link to DTN’s Millie Hill Trailhead, a 5-mile system just west of Park Avenue.

The council also approved an agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, that lays out terms of the grant. Project completion may be no later than July 31, 2024.

In other action, the council:

— Approved a letter of understanding with the bargaining unit for firefighters to provide incentives for adding more part-time firefighters. The incentives include in-house training and a $500 bonus for successful Firefighter II certification, plus additional bonuses for substantial work hours.

— Authorized the purchase of two dual-band 800 megahertz portable Motorola radios and accessories for the fire department. The $13,994 cost will be covered by a TC Energy Foundation grant secured by Deputy Director of Fire Services Jeff Friedenstab.

— Received a bid of $53,110 from Bacco Construction Co. of Iron Mountain for sewer repairs on the 500 block of South Tamarack Street where a small sinkhole has formed. The lone bid will be reviewed by staff for a recommendation. Groundwater issues would make it difficult for city crews to do the work on their own, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said.

— Approved an agreement with building owners on the 200 block of East Ludington Street to allow elevated bistro lights similar to those between Downtown Plaza and City Hall. Art displays may also be hung on the cross-street wires. The agreement includes Woods Sandstone Condo Association, Harry’s, The Daily News and First National Bank & Trust. Material expenses are covered by private donations generated through the Dickinson Area Community Foundation.
