Jobless rates rise slightly in UP
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Upper Peninsula’s unemployment rate climbed slightly in June even as an estimated 500 jobs were added in the region, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.
The June unemployment rate of 5.5% compared to 5.2% in May. The region’s civilian labor force in June totaled 135,000 workers, including 7,400 unemployed. That compared to 6,900 people out of work among a labor force of 134,000 in May.
“Most of Michigan’s regional jobless rates saw typical June increases,” said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. “June nonfarm jobs increased throughout the state as seasonal hiring continued across multiple industries.”
Michigan’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June was 4.8%, up from 4.6% in May. The state’s civilian labor force grew by 0.4% over the same period.
Dickinson County’s jobless rate of 4.4% in June was up from 3.9% in May and down from 5.3% a year ago. The county showed a civilian labor force of 12,480 in June, including 554 unemployed. That compared to 489 unemployed among a labor force of 12,488 in May.
