Local data: Dickinson has new virus death

Local data Thursday showed a rise in area COVID-19 activity from the previous week, with 61 new confirmed positives in Iron County and 57 in Dickinson County, along with another death blamed on the coronavirus.

Dickinson County also had 40 probable coronavirus positives but Iron County only three probables since Aug. 11, according to figures posted Thursday on the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department’s Facebook page. The DIDHD reclassified 85 people in Dickinson County and 20 in Iron County as recovered from the virus.

The DIDHD on Thursday had Dickinson County at 5,548 confirmed positives and 2,722 probable cases to date, with 7,826 recovered, 117 deaths and 327 cases still active. For Iron County, the agency had 2,692 confirmed cases to date and 388 probables, with 2,814 recovered, 87 deaths and 179 active cases.

On the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 476 confirmed positives since Aug. 9 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 114 in Marquette County, 58 in Houghton County, 49 in Iron County, 48 in Dickinson County, 38 in Delta and Menominee counties, 27 in Chippewa County, 22 in Gogebic County, 16 in Baraga County, 15 in Schoolcraft and Mackinac counties, 14 in Alger County, 11 in Ontonagon County, six in Luce County and five in Keweenaw County. The state listed new virus-related deaths in Dickinson and Baraga counties.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 57,695 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 884 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 544 confirmed cases and 61 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 721 confirmed cases and 850 probable, 14 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,040 confirmed, 118 probable and 37 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,170 confirmed, 749 probable and eight deaths, seven probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,198 confirmed cases and 778 probable, 13 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,807 confirmed cases and 927 probable, 28 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,923 confirmed cases, 379 probable and 54 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,664 confirmed cases and 365 probable, 71 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,181 confirmed cases and 590 probable, 42 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 3,843 confirmed cases and 5,552 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,311 confirmed cases, 1,909 probable and 62 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,506 confirmed cases and 2,700 probable, 93 deaths and 23 probable; Houghton County, 7,609 confirmed cases, 1,185 probable, 91 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,466 confirmed cases and 2,535 probable, 137 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 13,712 confirmed cases, 3,607 probable and 131 deaths, 11 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 23,165 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Aug. 9, or an average of about 3,309 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,731,787 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 103 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 37,774.

The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, on Tuesdays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Thursday had Marinette County at 12,821 COVID-19 positives so far, up 86 since Aug. 11, and 133 deaths; Vilas County, 5,898 positives, up 41, and 91 deaths; Forest County, 3,029 positives, up 33, and 52 deaths; Iron County, 1,617 positives, up eight, and 48 deaths; and Florence County, 1,200 positives, up 10, and 17 deaths.
