Man eludes arrest in Niagara

NIAGARA, Wis. — A man who barricaded himself in a Niagara residence for hours Monday evening could not be found when law enforcement eventually gained access to the home, the city’s police chief said.

The standoff began about 5 p.m. Monday when officers attempted to take the man into custody on multiple felony charges at his residence in the 1800 block of River Street, according to a news release early Tuesday from Niagara Police Chief Angela Moreau.

The man fled inside and blocked entry, refusing to come out and surrender, the news release stated. Law enforcement finally went in under a search and arrest warrant but were “unable to locate the subject at that time.”

The site is considered secure now and poses no danger to the public, according to the news release.

Law enforcement provided no information on the man’s name, whereabouts or the felonies he faced when originally sought. Additional details may be released as the investigation continues, the news release stated.

The situation in Niagara on Monday forced traffic to be rerouted around the Wisconsin-Michigan border community until late into the night. Michigan State Police set up a roadblock on U.S. 141 at Breitung Cutoff Road in Breitung Township. South of Niagara, all traffic was sent on U.S. 8 north into Norway, according to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s office.

Along with Niagara Police, assisting in the incident were the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Special Response Team, the Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Florence County Sheriff’s Department, Marinette Police Department, Menominee Police Department, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Auxiliary, the Marinette County chaplain, Marinette County Communications Center, Niagara Area Emergency Unit and the Niagara Fire Department.
