Raising crane

A pair of sandhill cranes usher their well-grown chick — referred to as a “colt” — from a recently mowed field into taller grass along Six Mile Lake Road in Felch Township. Though this colt didn’t appear to be flying just yet, crane chicks can take to the air as early as mid-July. They likely won’t leave the area, however, until fall, and then may linger at staging areas in Wisconsin before finally making the migration to wintering areas in Florida and other southern states.
