Few details on reported standoff in Niagara

Traffic shifted around border community

Law enforcement agencies from both sides of the border were called in Monday evening for a reported standoff in Niagara, Wis.

No details were immediately available on the situation that began unfolding in early evening. Video footage temporarily posted online from Niagara showed officers in tactical gear and armored vehicles massed in the 1800 block of River Street.

Later online posts indicated several loud bangs could be heard.

A woman at the Marinette County Sheriff’s office would not provide any information as to what was happening except to confirm an ongoing situation in Niagara. Numerous other area agencies have been enlisted in the incident as well.

Traffic was being rerouted around the Wisconsin-Michigan border community, which reportedly was in lockdown.

Michigan State Police set up a roadblock on U.S. 141 at Breitung Cutoff Road in Breitung Township. An MSP officer on site said Wisconsin law enforcement had requested they not allow anyone to cross into that state.

South of Niagara, all traffic was being sent on U.S. 8 north into Norway, according to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s office.

No indication was given when the roadblocks might be lifted. Motorists were asked to avoid the area until further notice.
