County fair officially opens today
NORWAY — Dickinson County Fairgrounds in Norway will be bustling with fairgoers this evening.
The 112th fair officially kicks off at 5 p.m. today, Exhibitor Day.
Officials hope for a record turnout with plenty of sunshine in the forecast.
The Skerbeck Carnival opens at 4 p.m. and continues until the fair closes at 11 p.m. Daily ride armbands are $25 each day.
Spectators can catch the breeding livestock show from noon to 4:30 p.m. today. Bingo will run from 3 to 9 p.m. in the new office building.
Grandstand entertainment starts at 6 tonight with the Wisconsin Upper Michigan Pulling Association, or WUMPA, competition.
The fair’s Youth Day on Friday will be highlighted by all youth and open dairy entries judged in the morning, then the youth market livestock show judging starting at noon.
The carnival opens for riding at 1 p.m. and continues until close of the fair.
The draft horse show is at 2:30 p.m. in the arena. Bingo will run from 1 to 9 p.m. in the office building.
Spectators can catch the Lumberjack Shows at 2, 4 or 6 p.m. on the midway.
Grandstand entertainment starts with the tractor pulls at 10 a.m., then the demolition derby returning at 8 p.m. Friday. Carry-ins will be restricted during the fair in the grandstand area.
The exhibition building will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. today and Friday.
Admission to the fair is $6 a day or $20 for the week. Ages 5 and younger are admitted free. All grandstand shows are free.
The Fun Dog Show set for the fair Sunday morning has been canceled due to the recent and serious outbreak of canine parvovirus in the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and concerns among participants, the Almost Animal Shelter staff and board announced Wednesday morning.
“The paperwork requirements would impede participants at this time of short notice, and we would be forced to not let them show their dogs,” said Diane Luczak, shelter manager. “We are sorry to have to do this, but our beloved dogs’ safety is our main concern.”
