NORWAY -- Dante Stachowicz took top livestock show prize Friday at the Dickinson County Fair.
The 15-year-old won the grand champion title with his Angus cross steer Apollo in the youth market livestock show. The 1 1/2-year-old steer weighs 1,286 pounds.
Stachowicz has been a regular showing animals at the fair for the past seven years. "I have shown steers for five and hogs for seven," he said.
The Niagara High School sophomore is the son of Jim Stachowicz of Vulcan and Nikki Wolosyn of Niagara, Wis.
Stachowicz said raising market animals is in the family. "My dad and aunt showed when they were kids and we just kept the tradition going," he said.
As a member of the Yooper Scoopers 4-H Club, it takes a lot of commitment to raising market animals. "It's a lot of hard work -- and all that work leads up to this," he said.
Stachowicz will be ready for next year as he already has his steer for the show.
Grace Heimerl, 16, of Norway, took reserve champion honors with her black Angus named Ollie.
The year-old Angus weighs in at 1,157 pounds.
Heimerl is also a veteran at showing at the fair, taking part for nine years with the exception of last year.
The Bits and Bridles 4-H Club member also noted that there's a lot of work that goes into the project. "Very tiring -- especially at fair time," she said. "This year I just came to have fun -- not worrying about winning."
The Kingsford High School junior is the daughter of Jim Heimerl of Iron Mountain and Heather Forgette of Norway.
The fair continues this weekend and ends at 5 p.m. Monday.
