Area virus activity rises but remains at low level
COVID-19 activity in the area rose last week but remained relatively low, local data showed.
Dickinson County had 16 new confirmed coronavirus positives, up seven since Oct. 6, and 12 probables for the seven-day span, according to figures posted Thursday on the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department’s Facebook page.
Iron County had 16 confirmed positives for the week, up three from the previous week, and one probable case.
The DIDHD reclassified 107 people in Dickinson County and 32 in Iron County as recovered from the virus.
Neither county recorded a new virus-related death.
The DIDHD on Thursday had Dickinson County at 5,799 confirmed positives and 2,902 probable cases to date, with 8,449 recovered, 119 deaths and 133 cases still active. For Iron County, the agency had 2,942 confirmed cases to date and 410 probables, with 3,173 recovered, 94 deaths and 85 active cases.
On the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 216 confirmed positives since Oct. 4 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 43 in Marquette County; 32 in Delta and Houghton counties; 22 in Menominee County; 18 in Chippewa County; 13 in Gogebic County; 10 in Iron and Mackinac counties; nine in Dickinson, Baraga and Ontonagon counties; five in Alger County; two in Schoolcraft County; and one in Keweenaw and Luce counties. The state recorded no new virus-related deaths in the Upper Peninsula for the week.
Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 59,972 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 916 deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 564 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 757 confirmed cases and 860 probable, 15 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,098 confirmed, 127 probable and 40 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,222 confirmed, 803 probable and eight deaths, eight probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,269 confirmed cases and 796 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,888 confirmed cases and 957 probable, 31 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,970 confirmed cases, 411 probable and 55 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,925 confirmed cases and 391 probable, 78 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,312 confirmed cases and 616 probable, 43 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 3,996 confirmed cases and 5,851 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,492 confirmed cases, 2,041 probable and 63 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,776 confirmed cases and 2,893 probable, 94 deaths and 24 probable; Houghton County, 7,861 confirmed cases, 1,211 probable, 92 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,693 confirmed cases and 2,885 probable, 139 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 14,149 confirmed cases, 3,854 probable and 139 deaths, 15 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Tuesday had 12,548 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Oct. 4, or an average of about 1,793 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,861,595 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 152 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 38,919.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Friday had Marinette County at 13,486 COVID-19 positives so far, up 73 since Oct. 6, and 140 deaths, up one; Vilas County, 6,116 positives, up 26, and 101 deaths, up one; Forest County, 3,166 positives, up 19, and 52 deaths; Iron County, 1,671 positives, up five, and 49 deaths; and Florence County, 1,259 positives, up three, and 17 deaths.
