Ambulance millage also on Iron County ballot

A 1-mill property tax levy is proposed in Iron County to support ambulance services throughout the county through 2025.

The county board in June approved wording for the proposed levy of $1 per $1,000 of taxable property for Iron County’s ambulance provider.

The county now has a 0.15-mill levy, first approved in 2016 and renewed in 2020 through 2024, that along with revenue from patient transports provides about $80,590 to Aspirus MedEvac, which has the four-year contract to provide two advanced life support — or ALS — ambulances with crews covering the east and west sides of the county 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But Aspirus MedEvac officials said the existing millage is not nearly enough to compensate for costs to provide the service. The existing 0.15-mill levy would be dropped if the new four-year levy passes Tuesday.

The proposed new levy would raise an estimated $584,049 in the first year.

County Civil Counsel Steve Tinti pointed out in June that if voters approve the new millage, the county would be required to go back out for bids on the ambulance service, with a duty to consider all proposals, not just one from Aspirus.

Voters will be asked as well to renew a half-mill levy to fund the Iron County Youth Camp from 2023 through 2026. The tax of 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value would raise an estimated $292,025 in the first year.

Camp Batawagama is at 909 Pentoga Trail on Indian Lake, off County Road 424 west of Alpha and east of Gaastra.

There is no opposition in four of the five Iron County Board districts, with the District 4 seat potentially open. Patti Peretto, a Democrat, is seeking reelection in District 1, while three other incumbents are running without party affiliation. They are Mike Stafford, District 2; Mark Stauber, District 3; and Jacob Conery, District 5.

There are no candidates on the ballot for the District 4 seat now held by Jeff Ofsdahl. The district includes the city of Crystal Falls, Mansfield and Mastodon townships and part of Stambaugh Township.

Incumbent Iron County District Attorney Chad A. DeRouin is unopposed, running as a Republican. DeRouin was appointed in May 2021 after Democrat Melissa Powell resigned. Charles Battan is a Democratic candidate for reelection to the Iron County Road Commission and is also unopposed.

VILLAGE of ALPHA

Voters will be asked to restore the full amount of the original authorized charter rate of 20 mills, or $20 per $1,000 of taxable value, for three years. The established rate has been reduced to 16.8 mills, or $16.80 per $1,000 of taxable value, due to Headlee millage rollbacks. Restoring the full rate is estimated to provide an additional $7,932 in annual revenue beginning in 2023.

No candidates are on the ballot for president in the village of Alpha in Mastodon Township, Precinct 1B.

MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP

Three Republicans are unopposed to fill partial terms through Nov. 20, 2024, for township offices. They are John C. Leutz, clerk; Rosalie A. Poynter, treasurer; and Mike Carey, trustee.

CRYSTAL FALLS TOWNSHIP

A four-year renewal of 3.5 mills, or $3.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, is on the ballot. It would raise an estimated $405,021 in the first year.

CITY OF GAASTRA

Mari Kay McNamara and Ashley Ingram Schober are unopposed for two-year city commissioner terms while Ethan Amerson is unopposed for a partial city commissioner term through Nov. 30, 2024. Richard Holm is unopposed for mayor.

CITY OF CRYSTAL FALLS

Travis Cudnohufsky and Zachary W. Hautala are unopposed for city council seats.

CITY OF CASPIAN

Matt Jacks, Robert Ketchum and Gary Sabol are unopposed for three city commissioner positions.

HEMATITE TOWNSHIP
