Ambulance millage approved in Iron County

Several millage proposals won approval Tuesday in Iron County, including a 1-mill property tax levy to support ambulance services throughout the county through 2025.

The proposed levy of $1 per $1,000 of taxable value was approved 3,335 yes to 2,092 no. The county now has a 0.15-mill levy, first approved in 2016 and renewed in 2020 through 2024, that goes to Aspirus MedEvac. The existing 0.15-mill levy will be dropped with passage of the new levy, which will raise an estimated $584,049 in the first year.

The county is also required to go back out for bids on the ambulance service, with a duty to consider all proposals, not just one from Aspirus, according to County Civil Counsel Steve Tinti.

Also approved Tuesday:

— A half-mill levy to fund the Iron County Youth Camp from 2023 through 2026. The tax of 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value will raise an estimated $292,025 in the first year. The vote was 3,584 yes to 1,880 no.

— In Crystal Falls Township, a renewal of 3.5 mills, or $3.50 per $1,000 of taxable value. It will raise an estimated $405,021 in the first year. The vote was 511 yes to 268 no.

— In Hematite Township, a five-year renewal of a 5-mill levy, or $5 per $1,000 of taxable value, is proposed. It will raise an estimated $99,736 in the first year and was approved 91 yes to 39 no.

— In the village of Alpha, restoration of the full amount of the original authorized charter rate of 20 mills, or $20 per $1,000 of taxable value, for three years. The established rate has been reduced to 16.8 mills, or $16.80 per $1,000 of taxable value, due to Headlee millage rollbacks. Restoring the full rate is estimated to provide an additional $7,932 in annual revenue beginning in 2023. The proposal was approved 44 yes to 26 no.

Starting at $3.50/week.
