IRON MOUNTAIN -- A house at 607 Kent St. was heavily damaged by fire and smoke Friday night but no one was home and there were no serious injuries, authorities said.
After being dispatched at 9:14 p.m. the initial crew arrived within three minutes to find flames coming from windows of the home, said Jeff Friedenstab, Iron Mountain deputy director of fire services.
While battling the fire and searching for possible victims, a recall of off-duty firefighters was requested along with mutual aid from Breitung Township. A portion of the first floor burned through before the fire was brought under control at 10:45 p.m.
An elderly female from a neighboring home was assessed by Integrity Care EMS for possible smoke inhalation.
The homeowner confirmed that no one was at home at the time of the fire, Friedenstab said.
A total of 11 firefighters, manning 2 engines, responded. All units were clear by 12:15 a.m. Saturday.
Assisting were Breitung Township Fire Department, Iron Mountain Police Department, Michigan State Police, Integrity Care EMS, We Energies and DTE. A request was made to the American Red Cross to assist the homeowner.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
