Man accused of firing revolver in Norway bar

IRON MOUNTAIN — A man faces four felony charges after he was accused of firing a revolver shot Saturday night toward a bartender who asked him to leave a Norway tavern.

John Aversano Jr. was charged Monday in Dickinson County District Court with weapons-firearms-discharge in or at a building, a 10-year felony if convicted; weapons-carrying concealed, a five-year felony; assault with a dangerous weapon (felonious assault), a four-year felony; weapons-felony firearm, a two-year felony; and weapons-firearms-possession on restricted premises, a 90-day misdemeanor.

Norway Police were called to Mister Mom’s bar about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on a report of a shot fired inside, Chief Patrick Wilkey said.

Aversano had been at the bar, intoxicated, and when asked to leave took out a revolver and fired a round toward the bartender, striking a floorboard, according to the criminal complaint. He fired another shot outside the bar before fleeing, leaving the revolver on the side of the road, the complaint states.

Norway Police, with assistance from Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police, apprehended Aversano a short time later, Wilkey said. When taken into custody, he had an empty holster and several rounds for the revolver, according to the complaint.

Bond was set at $25,000, cash or surety. District Judge Julie LaCost scheduled a probable cause conference for Dec. 2 and a preliminary examination for Dec. 9.
