IRON MOUNTAIN — More bucks have been harvested in Menominee County than in any other county in Michigan during the 2022 firearm deer season, according to the Department of Natural Resources’ new online reporting system.

As of 6:30 p.m. Friday, Menominee County’s buck harvest was listed at 2,249, slightly higher than No. 2 downstate Montcalm County at 2,218.

Michigan’s 16-day firearm deer season opened Nov. 15 and runs through Wednesday. Hunters are required to report a harvest within 72 hours.

All harvest figures are available at https://www.mdnr-elicense.com/HarvestReportSummary. Because it’s a new system, the DNR doesn’t have comparison data from previous years.

To date, Delta County showed the second-highest firearm season buck harvest in the U.P. at 1,483, followed by Marquette County, 1,209; Iron, 922; and Dickinson, 853.

In Wisconsin, preliminary harvest totals for the opening weekend of the gun deer season showed a 15% increase statewide from 2021, though wildlife officials say registration numbers are actually returning to normal for a five-year average.

In Florence County, however, the preliminary weekend buck harvest of 601 was up by 20% from the five-year average. In the northern forest zone of Marinette County the 1,008 bucks registered on opening weekend represented a 16% increase, according to the DNR’s data base.

Wisconsin’s nine-day season opened Nov. 19 and ends Sunday. The forecast calls for a high of 53 today. It should be cooler Sunday, with a high near 37 and a chance of rain or snow.

Successful hunters are reminded that photos may be emailed to news@ironmountaindailynews com.
