IM updated on veterans’ tax credits

IRON MOUNTAIN — Legislation that would give municipalities financial relief for providing property tax credits to disabled military veterans has passed the Michigan Senate and is under consideration in the House.

Iron Mountain City Manager Jordan Stanchina discussed Senate Bills 783 and 1084 with the city council Monday, explaining it would change the benefit from a property tax exemption to an income tax credit for eligible veterans.

The same level of tax relief would be maintained, according to the Michigan Municipal League.

“The process for eligible veterans to claim their credit would remain the same, while cities, villages, townships, and counties would get much-needed financial relief from the state,” MML official Jennifer Rigterink said in a Nov. 30 legislative blog post.

Stanchina said the measures are significant, though he believes it would be better for the state to reimburse local governments directly, rather than introduce a new income tax credit.

The bills have been referred to the House Committee on Tax Policy. The tax exemptions are currently available under Public Act 161 of 2013.

In other action Monday, the council:

— Approved a $5,000 contribution to the Dickinson Area Economic Development Alliance, the same as in recent years. The alliance, which relies on private business for most of its funding, promotes talent attraction, business retention and the economic growth of the region.

— Approved a street closure for Friday’s Downtown Christmas Walk and Community Tree Lighting. Ludington Street will be closed from Stephenson Avenue to the alley at First National Bank & Trust from 3 to 7 p.m. The Hughitt Street parking lot near the downtown stage will be blocked for a live nativity.

— Corrected a tower lease renewal for Interlink Computers Technology. The corrected base rent amount is $2,720, down from $4,081. The 10-year extension, initially approved in February, has a 3% escalator each year.

— Reported 37 deer harvested as of Friday under a managed archery hunt on designated parcels. The hunt continues until Jan. 1.
