State data: Area COVID cases decline

The number of new COVID-19 cases in the area continued to dwindle in the past week, according to state data.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday recorded only six new confirmed positives in Dickinson County since Jan. 10, down 16 from the previous week. Iron County had only four new confirmed cases, six fewer than the week before. Neither county had a new virus-related death.

The MDHHS website Tuesday added 123 confirmed positives since Jan. 10 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 32 in Marquette County; 19 in Delta County; 17 in Menominee County; eight in Chippewa County; seven in Houghton, Baraga and Gogebic counties; six in Dickinson and Ontonagon counties; five in Schoolcraft County; four in Iron County; three in Luce County; and one in Alger and Mackinac counties.

Delta County had the only new death attributed to COVID-19 for the week.

Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 62,902 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 960 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 580 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 776 confirmed cases and 879 probable, 16 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,178 confirmed, 141 probable and 41 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,273 confirmed, 822 probable and eight deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,369 confirmed cases and 820 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,933 confirmed cases and 1,021 probable, 33 deaths and five probable; Baraga County, 2,119 confirmed cases, 448 probable and 56 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,108 confirmed cases and 416 probable, 83 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,558 confirmed cases and 691 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,113 confirmed cases and 5,977 probable, and 98 deaths, 20 probable; Menominee County, 4,840 confirmed cases, 2,178 probable and 65 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 6,185 confirmed cases and 3,093 probable, 102 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,174 confirmed cases, 1,233 probable, 94 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,060 confirmed cases and 3,241 probable, 148 deaths and 37 probable; and Marquette County, 14,636 confirmed cases, 4,197 probable and 144 deaths, 18 probable.

The MDHHS on Tuesday added 9,687 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Jan. 10, or an average of about 1,384 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,017,948 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Jan. 10 recorded 184 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 41,185.

The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,260 COVID-19 positives so far, up 42 since Jan. 10, and 148 deaths; Vilas County, 6,416 positives, up 16, and 107 deaths, up one; Forest County, 3,296 positives, up five, and 54 deaths; Iron County, 1,793 positives, up five, and 50 deaths, up one; and Florence County, 1,338 positives, up five, and 17 deaths.
