MDHHS: New COVID cases remain low in area
COVID-19 activity in the region again stayed relatively low in the past week, state data showed Tuesday.
Both Dickinson and Iron counties recorded 10 new confirmed cases since Feb. 7, up two for Dickinson but down four for Iron County from the previous week, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website.
The MDHHS website Tuesday added 157 confirmed COVID-19 positives since Feb. 7, up 63 from the previous week, to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 45 in Marquette County; 18 in Chippewa County; 17 in Houghton County; 10 in Dickinson, Iron, Menominee, Baraga and Gogebic counties; nine in Delta County; six in Ontonagon and Schoolcraft counties; three in Mackinac County; and one each in Keweenaw, Luce and Alger counties.
The U.P. had no new virus-related deaths for the week.
Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 63,410 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 983 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 584 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 783 confirmed cases and 884 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,190 confirmed, 141 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,282 confirmed, 833 probable and nine deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,400 confirmed cases and 821 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,944 confirmed cases and 1,038 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,139 confirmed cases, 449 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,148 confirmed cases and 424 probable, 84 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,578 confirmed cases and 696 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,176 confirmed cases and 6,034 probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 4,891 confirmed cases, 2,199 probable and 68 deaths, 16 probable; Dickinson County, 6,218 confirmed cases and 3,100 probable, 105 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,219 confirmed cases, 1,234 probable, 95 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,097 confirmed cases and 3,281 probable, 150 deaths and 39 probable; and Marquette County, 14,761 confirmed cases, 4,332 probable and 147 deaths, 21 probable.
The MDHHS on Tuesday added 6,888 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Feb. 7, up 1,089 for the week, or an average of about 984 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,043,192 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Feb. 7 recorded only 59 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, down 60, to reach 41,868.
The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.
For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,432 COVID-19 positives so far, up 45 since Feb. 8, and 149 deaths; Vilas County, 6,469 positives, up 14, and 108 deaths, up one; Forest County, 3,316 positives, up six, and 56 deaths, up one; Iron County, 1,803 positives, up three, and 50 deaths; and Florence County, 1,344 positives, up two, and 17 deaths.
