Tip-Up Town fishing contest today; Wisconsin wolf session on Tuesday
IRON MOUNTAIN — Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club will host a gun and knife show next weekend, giving a week to recharge after today’s Tip-Up Town of the U.P.
Food will be served at the clubhouse north of Channing until 6 p.m. today. The fishing contest wraps up at 4:30 p.m.
Hours for the gun and knife show are 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Admission is $5 and free for children 12 and under.
In Florence, Wis., Northern Lites will host a fishing derby at Fisher Lake on Feb. 11. Register at Northern Lites, 4838 Highway 70.
Fishing pressure has been light this week with the bitter cold temperatures.
“Only a mixed basket of a few panfish and a couple of northern pike were reported,” said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence.
That will likely change as temperatures rise. Wednesday’s predicted high is a balmy 42 degrees.
Along with Tip-Up Town, several other activities are scheduled today — the Upper Peninsula Trappers Association workshop at Frank Rodman Community Club in Hermansville, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Niagara Lions Club meat and rifle raffle at Bob’s Country Bar on Highway O, starting at 1 p.m.; and a Roadhouse 139 fishing derby on Long Lake in Florence County, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will hold a public listening session for its proposed Wolf Management Plan at 4 p.m. Tuesday as part of the public review and comment period, which remains open until Feb. 28.
Registration is required by noon on Monday for anyone wishing to provide comment. The plan can be viewed at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/wolfmanagementplan.
Members of the public who do not wish to provide testimony during the hearing and only want to listen can watch a live feed of the hearing on the DNR’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAMpsiAPWoc.
After the event, the recording will be accessible on YouTube for on-demand viewing. More information is available at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/newsroom/release/66196.
