Child dies after vehicle crash in Marinette County

MARINETTE, Wis. — A 5-year-old child died Thursday after being partially ejected from the back seat in a two-vehicle crash in the town of Stephenson.

Stella Klempke of Crivitz was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Dylan Klempke, 29, of Crivitz, and was not restrained, Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller stated in a news release.

The crash occurred on County Highway X just after 4 p.m. when a northbound vehicle driven by Kurtis Roskom, 48, of Crivitz, stopped for a stop sign on Newton Lake Road but proceeded into the path of an eastbound vehicle driven by Klempke. The collision caused the Klempke vehicle to overturn on its side.

Failure to yield from a stop sign and lack of use of a restraint appear to have been factors in the fatal crash, which remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office, Miller said.

Assisting were the Town of Stephenson Fire Department, Crivitz Police Department, Twin Bridge Rescue and Crivitz Rescue.

This is Marinette County’s second traffic fatality of 2023.

Starting at $2.99/week.
