Ready to soar at Pine Mountain
Fourth competition added for today to 2023 Continental Cup event
SAMSON HUTCHINSON of Florence, Wis., in the red cap, gets a signature Thursday from ski jumper Adeline Swanson of St. Paul, Minn. Looking on are, from left, Susie Fox of the Kiwanis Ski Club, Brigham Page from Vermont, Anna Zigman of Minneapolis, Nathan Krotz of Minneapolis and Isak Nicholas of Barrington, Ill. The four on the right are not competing in the Continental Cup events but will be fore-jumpers, gaining valuable experience at one of the more challenging hills, Fox said, adding that Zigman and Swanson will be the first women to jump off the new Pine Mountain tower. The top jumpers on the Continental Cup ski jumping circuit — many with World Cup experience — will fly at Pine Mountain this weekend.
Official competitions are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. today, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Trial rounds begin at noon today, 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
Each of the four competitions will consist of two rounds, with the second to follow about 20 minutes after completion of the first. All times may be adjusted, depending on weather conditions.
Today’s competition, a late addition to the weekend calendar, was announced late Thursday afternoon by the Kiwanis Ski Club. Previously, only official training was scheduled for today.
If all four competitions take place, it will be the first time in Continental Cup history that four competitions have been held at the same venue on the same weekend, said Susie Fox, Kiwanis Ski Club corresponding secretary.
Norway has the top four skiers in the Continental Cup winter standings and all of them will compete at Giant Pine.
Benjamin Oestvold leads the pack, coming off a pair of victories Feb. 18 and 19 in Rena, Norway. He’s joined by Sondre Ringen, Joacim Oedegaard Bjoereng and Fredrik Villumstad, who soared 487 feet on his longest ride at Rena.
The hill record at Pine Mountain is 472 feet, set by Clemens Aigner of Austria at a 2020 Continental Cup event.
Anders Fannemel is also in Norway’s strong contingent, ranking sixth in the winter Continental Cup. Fannemel has a World Cup victory to his credit at Engelberg, Switzerland, in December 2017.
Austria is again well-represented at Giant Pine, led by Clemens Leitner, who has placed as high as 12th in World Cup events this year.
Slovenia’s Zak Mogel, seventh in the winter Continental Cup, will be joined by teammates Tilen Bartol and Rok Masle, both in the top 20.
Germany’s Luca Roth, 10th in winter points, and David Siegel, 12th, round out the Continental Cup leaders in this weekend’s field. The German team also includes Pius Paschke, who sailed 456 feet in winning a 2019 Continental Cup event at Pine Mountain.
Other nations represented are Poland, France, Switzerland and the United States.
Poland’s Jakob Wolny and Klemens Muranka are returning champions — Muranka leaping 461 feet in 2017 and Wolny reaching 453 feet in 2018.
The U.S. jumpers are two-time Olympian Kevin Bickner of Wauconda, Ill., and Patrick Gasienica of McHenry, Ill., who joined Bickner on the 2022 Olympic team at Beijing.
