IM council OKs mower purchases
IRON MOUNTAIN — A new lawnmower for Cemetery Park will cost nearly $23,000, replacing a unit that’s 11 years old.
After reviewing bids from three dealers, Iron Mountain City Council approved the purchase of a 2023 Walker Model D21d zero-turn mower from OK Rental Sales & Services of Ishpeming.
The 48-inch mower with a diesel liquid-cooled engine was the most expensive of the models offered, but it has the features the city wanted. A power dump will let the operator empty the catcher without leaving the seat, saving on labor during spring and fall cleanups, Director of Public Works Scott Thomas said.
The least-expensive model was a 2024 Toro 800 gas engine air-cooled unit with no power dump at $16,389 from Four Seasons Small Engine of Escanaba. The Walker mower cost $22,628.
Bids were also solicited a year ago, but supply chain issues made it difficult to acquire the type of mower needed, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said. The budget had called for spending about $17,500.
In other action Monday, the council:
— Approved the purchase of a 2023 Husqvarna MZ61 zero turn mower for public works use for $5,805 from Ride North in Kingsford. The 61-inch deck, air-cooled gas engine commercial mower will replace a 2002 Kubota mower. The city had budgeted $10,000.
— By committee decision, approved the purchase of a two-wheel drive 2019 Ram 1500 half-ton pickup truck with 44,000 miles from Town & Country Sales of Quinnesec for $26,900. Bids on used trucks for public works had been received from Town & Country and three other area dealers.
— Set a payment deadline of April 30 for unpaid water bills at about 75 locations totaling $6,884. After the deadline each year, unpaid charges are transferred to the tax roll and assessed against the property to which the service was furnished.
— Accepted a $17,600 bid from Smith Metal Structures of Iron Mountain to replace and install seven insulated steel service doors at the public works building, provided the quote includes painting. Otherwise, a bid from Gundlach Champion of Iron Mountain was $16,500, plus $2,000 to paint the replacement doors.
— Renewed a contract with Guardian Pest Solutions for pest control services at the police and fire building at annual cost of $816.
— Heard Stanchina report that Bacco Construction Co. of Iron Mountain will conduct street and alley paving this spring under a $326,000 contract awarded last fall. Nothing was completed before snowfall last year, he noted. The schedule includes 1,830 feet of Parkview Drive beginning at Harding Avenue; 1,125 feet of Antoine Street from North Milwaukee Avenue to Milliman Street; and 715 feet of Cedar Avenue between East D and East F streets. About 1,000 feet of alleys are also listed — near Huntington Bank between West F and West G streets; near Leeds Real Estate between West H and West G streets; and near Janet Street between Lincoln and Antoine streets.
