Honoring fallen officers

The Upper Peninsula 2023 Peace Officer Memorial Service took place Thursday at Kingsford High School to remember officers who died in the line of duty. From left, Lincoln Edwards, Mari (Moraska) Negro, Dean Moraska and Ann Marie (Moraska) Muraro carried a wreath to honor their fallen relatives. In back is Lt. Jeremy Hauswirth, commander of the Michigan State Police Post in Iron Mountain. Edwards’ father was a Florence County officer who drown in the Menominee River on Feb. 1, 1957, after falling through the ice while assisting Kingsford Police in searching for a female being treated for mental illness. His name was added to the Roll Call of Fallen Officers. He will also be added to the Wisconsin State roll call. Norway City Patrolman Kenneth Moraska was killed May 23, 1971, while responding to a domestic disturbance. He was represented by his sister, Mari; his son, Dean; and his widow, Ann Marie. She spoke on how the loss affected his widow, seven daughters, and son born shortly after his death in 1957. Eighty-six names of fallen peace officers were read aloud during the ceremony, which is done in a different U.P. city each year during National Police Week. (Marguerite Lanthier/Daily News photos)
