IRON MOUNTAIN -- A De Pere, Wis., firm will provide a new excavator to the city of Iron Mountain at a cost of $118,770.
City staff reviewed bids on 11 pieces of equipment from eight dealers and consulted with the infrastructure committee before making a recommendation that was approved this week by the city council.
The mid-size excavator is a Takeuchi TB290 from Kelbe Brothers Equipment. Other bids ranged from $109,290 to $149,412. The Takeuchi has an operating weight of 18,630 pounds and a maximum digging depth of 15 feet.
The city now has two 2001 backhoes but adding the excavator will bring improved capabilities, according to City Manager Jordan Stanchina.
A trailer with a capacity of 40,000 pounds will also be purchased to move the unit. Four bids were opened Monday that ranged from $28,330 to $41,123. Once a purchase is made, the city's 1997 trailer with a capacity of 20,000 pounds will be offered for sale.
Also received Monday were bids for the acquisition of a front-end loader to replace a 2005 Volvo 110. The proposals ranged from $232,396 to $350,000 and were referred to staff.
In other action, the council:
-- Approved a $3,000 contribution to the Lake Antoine Association to aid in the control of invasive Eurasian milfoil. This year's plan is to treat 5.81 acres of the lake with herbicide, as approved by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, at an estimated cost of $12,260, said Jeff Jayne, the association's temporary secretary-treasurer.
-- Appointed Lucas Davidson to the Downtown Development Authority Board, filling a vacancy created by Elsa Pontbriand's resignation.
-- Approved a special use permit for TNT Fireworks to conduct a tent sale at 1535 N. Stephenson Ave., leasing property in the Holiday Inn lot from June 20 to July 7. This a renewal of the permit, but a change from a previous site on the 2000 block of South Stephenson east of Culver's.
-- Approved a letter of agreement with the union representing full-time city firefighters to allow part-time firefighters to work additional hours to cover shifts over the next six months. Part-time firefighters are normally limited to 48 hours per week, but the agreement would temporarily push the cap to 60 hours from June 1 to Nov. 1.
-- Accepted a quote from UP International Trucks of Iron Mountain to replace axle king pins on both of a truck's front wheels at a cost of $8,119. The city's policy requires pre-authorization from the council for any purchase in excess of $5,000. A quote from UP Truck Center of Quinnesec was $10,002 and two others offered no quotes.
-- Renewed the city's Michigan Municipal League membership for the next year at a cost of $5,124, an increase of 5%.
