Niagara High School names top graduates

TRISTAN COOLBAUGH
NIAGARA, Wis. — Niagara Superintendent Nathaniel Burklund, the board of education, and school faculty have announced the top five scholars in the graduating Class of 2023. They led the class of 39 graduates.
Tristan Coolbaugh, 17, will graduate first in his class with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.976. He is the only child of Jes Coolbaugh.
Coolbaugh is an honor student who has participated in basketball, Hi-Q, forensic public speaking, theater, Secret Society of Gamers, Badger Boys State, class treasurer, and student council. His other honors and awards include Academic Letter and Bar, National Honor Society, and he is the recipient of the 2023 DAR Good Citizen Award. He has also received the Academic Excellence Scholarship.
Coolbaugh named his mom, Jes, as his role model because as a single mother and the owner of her own business, she has always taught Tristan to have a great work ethic and to strive for excellence.
He enjoys playing basketball, fishing, bicycling, watching television, playing video games, playing card games, and spending time with friends. His community service includes working at the high school concession stands, and volunteering for various organizations including Niagara Area Business Association, Knights of Columbus, Niagara Lions Club, and Tri-County National Night Out. Coolbaugh is employed at Dollar General.

ANDAR OLSON
He will attend Northern Michigan University where he will pursue a degree in financial management. He hopes to become a financial advisor and eventually start his own business.
Andar Olson, 17, will graduate second in his class with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.913. He is the youngest child of Larry Olson. He has one sibling, Addrian Olson.
Olson is an honor student who has participated in wresting, football, track and field, forensic public speaking, and Badger Boys State. His honors include 2021 Northwoods Storm Most Improved Wrestler, and he was a gold medal winner at the state forensic public speaking competition.
He cited David Goggins, Navy Seal veteran, as his role model. Olson said, “He never let life get to him — he gave it to life.”
Olson enjoys weightlifting, playing guitar, reading, and challenging himself. His community service includes working as a lifeguard at Camp Forest Springs and helping in the soup kitchen at First Baptist Church. He has worked at Smith Casting Foundry and at Northern Lights YMCA as a lifeguard. He is a member of Redemption Hill Church in Kingsford.

ANTHONY PHILLIPS
Olson will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he will pursue a degree in legal studies. He will be participating in the ROTC program with plans to commission as an active-duty officer in the United States Marines following college graduation.
Anthony Phillips, 18, will graduate third in his class with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.677. He is the son of Heidi Phillips and Dan Phillips. His siblings are Michael Aderman, Jon Phillips, and Natalia Phillips.
He is an honor student who has participated in football, band, forensic public speaking, collective bargaining, and Badger Boys State. His honors and awards include 2022 Football Most Improved Player and Honors Band.
Phillips named Ginger Anderson as his role model because of her teaching excellence. “She teaches how to gain individualism and prepares students with the skills needed to effectively express themselves,” he said.
He enjoys going to the gym and taking long walks on the beach. His community services include helping with the Grandparent’s Day Program, Sunday basketball, Sam Chartier Flag Football, and raking leaves at church. Phillips currently works at Scott’s Uptown Lanes. He is a member of the United Methodist Church in Niagara.

AIDEN COLENSO
He will attend Michigan Technological University where he will major in civil engineering.
Aiden Colenso, 18, will graduate fourth in his class with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.664. He is the youngest child of Renae Ross and Jason Colenso. His siblings are Tristan Colenso, Annalise Colenso, and Ty Colenso.
He is an honor student who has participated in basketball, football, golf, theater, and forensic public speaking. His honors and awards include 2022 1st Team All-Conference and Offensive Player of the Year, both in football. Colenso is also a two-time medal winner at the state forensic public speaking competition.
He named his sister, Annalise, as his role model because she has taught Aiden to see things in a positive manner and how to cope with stress related to school or family. Her positivity has led to her success, despite how others have seen her. He hopes to follow in her footsteps.
Colenso enjoys fishing, hunting, weightlifting, basketball, tennis, and golf. His community service includes collecting maple syrup, planting trees and visiting schools in Costa Rica, highway garbage pick-up, and helping at the Lions Club Picnic and the church soup kitchen. His work experience includes Jimmy Johns, Scott’s Uptown Lanes, and Pet Supplies Plus. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

ABIGAIL TRIPP
Colenso will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he will major in industrial engineering.
Abigail Tripp, 18, will graduate fifth in her class with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.579. She is the second child of William and Tammy Tripp. Her siblings are Austin Tripp and Alex Tripp.
She is an honor student who has participated in volleyball, basketball, track & field, cross country, Badgers United, Student Council, and One-Act. Her honors and awards include 2022 Storm Award, National Honor Society, Junior Prom Queen, and Miss Niagara 2022. She has also served as class secretary all four years of high school.
Tripp cited her brother, Austin, as her role model because he always strives to be his best. “It has been inspiring to see Austin work to achieve his dream to become a physical therapist,” she stated. “His hard work has shown me that anything is achievable.”
She enjoys reading, being outdoors, running, and hanging out with her friends and family. Her community service includes selling 50/50 tickets for the Lions Club Meat Raffle, working high school concession stands, setting up for prom, and alter serving. Tripp’s work experience includes babysitting during the summer months. She is a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara.
This fall, she will be attending St. Norbert College where she will major in psychology. She plans to become a teen therapist.
Graduation ceremonies will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the high school gym.
