Quiz team becomes Kingsford’s first to win High School Bowl

KINGSFORD — Kingsford High School’s Quiz Bowl team made history this year, winning the school’s first championship in WNMU-TV’s High School Bowl competition, the Breitung Township School District announced.

The Flivvers defeated Marquette in the championship match, 230 to 210. The four students representing KHS on the television team were John Goupell, Christopher Burie, Mika Yuhasey and captain Hunter White. The team is coached by Colleen Driscoll.

The Kingsford team ended the season April 22 playing in the Upper Peninsula Spring Quiz Bowl Showdown at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Eight schools entered 12 teams, for a total of 53 students, and KHS was the only school to have two teams in trophy contention.

Kingsford teams finished third and fifth, respectively. In addition, individual awards were given to the top 12 students. KHS had the most students in the top 12: White, 2nd; Goupell, 10th; and Yuhasey, 12th. Two more students were in the top 20: Madelyn Edwards, 16th; and Owen Jenness, 19th.

Scholarships were also awarded. White received the Dave Goldsmith Outstanding Senior Scholarship for $1,500. Yuhasey received $1,500 to NMU, while Cy Olsen and Autumn Sleik each received $500 to NMU.

The team thanked the school, the KHS Academic Booster Club, family, friends and community members who supported them throughout the year.
