Man arrested after armed standoff in Athelstane
MARINETTE, Wis. — No injuries were reported after an armed man barricaded himself Wednesday in a residence in the Town of Athelstane, firing a shot at one point, according to Marinette County authorities.
The man, whose name was not released, eventually was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon by the Marinette County Special Response Team, Sheriff Randy Miller stated in a news release.
Deputies had contacted the 53-year-old Athelstane man — who had warrants for his arrest and drug information — just before noon at the residence, according to the news release. He retreated into the house, firing off a round inside, but no one was harmed, Miller said.
Deputies set up a perimeter and the response team, along with a BearCat armored vehicle, were called to assist.
After authorities spoke with the man multiple times, he was ultimately arrested and taken to the Marinette County Jail in Marinette, where he remains, Miller stated in the news release.
The man faces charges of felon in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and drug-related charges, according to Miller.
Assisting in the standoff incident were Marinette Police Department, the Marinette County police chaplain, Town of Athelstane officials and Silver Cliff Rescue.
The Brown County and Oconto County sheriff’s offices were also en route to the standoff location but were canceled after the man was taken into custody.
Miller said the incident remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office.
