CF man killed in hit-and-run in Mackinac County
ST. IGNACE — A downstate man faces felony hit-and-run charges after a 40-year-old Crystal Falls man was killed Monday night in Mackinac County while checking his vehicle parked on the side of U.S. 2.
Douglas R. Nelson Jr. was pronounced dead at the site of the collision, which occurred just after 9 p.m. near East Milakokia Lake Road in Newton Township, the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office said. Nelson’s vehicle was legally parked when a westbound pickup truck passed another vehicle at a high rate of speed and hit the pedestrian, deputies said.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, 34-year-old Eric Gilmour of Grand Blanc, continued for several miles before stopping on the side of the road. Off-duty police officers who witnessed the incident followed Gilmour and detained him until local police arrived, deputies said.
Gilmour was arraigned Tuesday on charges of driving under the influence causing death and failure to stop at the scene of a fatal accident.
He was being held on $500,000 bond and has been ordered to undergo a competency exam.
Assisting were Newton Township Fire, Garfield Township Fire, Portage Township EMS, Michigan Department of Transportation and Michigan State Police troopers from the St. Ignace, Manistique and Sault Ste. Marie posts.
